Did you mean to say the *maximum* hourly rate is $12.99 at Car2Go? Because if that's the minimum, there is no rental period where that is a better deal than ZipCar.

The ultimate issue with these services is there are massive gaps in service areas. I was a member of Zipcar way back in Seattle and after moving it here to Portland I never used it once: there simply were no convenient locations anywhere within a Quarter-mile of where I lived.

We signed up for one of the car-sharing services and have received one call to date, at a time when we needed the car, and outside the posted hours on the profile page. If that happens again we'll probably just cancel the service, we don't want people calling randomly when it's fairly obvious what the hours we posted are.

I'm excited to try out the Car2Go, I think it will be interesting to see how available these cars are, especially as it gets more use. Will they all end up on the eastside? Will there be Car2Go "movers" to keep them distributed equally across town?

The thing that I find interesting about this, is that it really isn't a ZipCar competitor. It seems like Car2Go is meant more as a quick easy way to cross town, not something you're going to want to use to go drive around and do errands like you may with a ZipCar. From that point of view, this seems more like a TriMet/cab alternative.

With the raising prices and cut back on service of TriMet busses, I for one will be happy to occassionally pay $5.25 for a quick 15 minute drive across town, instead of $2.50 for a crowded 50 minute ride.

BTW, they have free registration and free 30 minutes of driving if you sign up with the promo code ROSE. (I don't work for them, they've just been parked outside my office all week).

I'm just trying to figure out which one would be better to "accidentally" drive to California for a week, or if I should just get a fake ID and rent a car.

I rarely use Zipcar anymore, just once this year and that was in Miami. It's still a convenient option for someone like me who lives downtown and doesn't own (nor want to own) a car. Unlike the previous commenter there are 100+ car sharing vehicles within walking distance of me and I'll continue to subscribe to one or more of these services.

I've been a fan/user of zipcar for years. I walk/bike/bus for the majority of my trips, and use zipcar for the rare occasions that I need a car (large grocery runs, taking people home when they live far away and the buses have stopped running, trips to beach/mountain/etc). After looking at all these other services, I can see how they offer different options than zipcar, but I don't really find these options useful.

For example, if I needed to make a short trip and not have cargo space, I would just get on my bike.
