Will someone with kids in PPS please explain - if they lack this much in arts, and have a 54% graduate rate how does everyone there spend the day?
2
"...Portland's only 'arts focused' public school..."

(ahem) DaVinci (cough) Jackson (cough)
3
Close down the PDC and Portland schools would have enough money to pay Bon Jovi to be artist-in-residence.
4
@2 . er. "elementary" was supposed to go in there. thanks!
5
@D - I graduated from PPS in 2008, I always thought most people spent their days in test prep and study halls, with the occasional health class thrown in.

I wonder if this will make Buckman less of a magnet school and more zip-code based? Considering the neighborhood it's in, the student population is fairly diverse.
7
Selfish liberals won't ever pay for schools. Now kids are suffering because of it. Tragic.
8
@ #7-because Conservatives have such a great record of wanting to pay more taxes?

How is this possible in this city that has so many artists? DO we just import them from places that actually recognize the arts? And losing dance is like losing lunch! What kind of culture doesn't promote dance? A friggin' boring one. My condolensces to the mentioned instructors, the message seems to be "Don't become an arts educator".

@#8 When was the last time Portland had ANY conservative representation? This is all on the selfish liberal denizens of our once great city.

Please help us save the arts at Buckman!
We are doing a pledge style fundraiser in attempt to raise $70,000 by May 31st. If that goal isn't reached the checks will not be cashed and the credit cards will not be run. We cannot do it without the wider Portland community. Our children need your help.
You (Yes, you!) can donate here:

Hmm. Funny how "Team Jones," et. al. didnt say shit when Tubman was closed. Then again, why should they worry about a school that focuses on academics instead of artistic expression and which students might be offended by Halloween

Liberals selfish and won't support schools? Makes no sense- it's apathy on all of our parts. The district has no top level administrative support for arts and music- it is ALWAYS the first cut program, and most of us say, "gosh, well, we need to cut somewhere, and kids have to read, that's more important." Want arts and music? Be liberal, conservative, Republican, Democrat, who cares- get out there and tell PPS that it's important to you, your child, your family, your community- your economy. Join the efforts of CAN. It's been 20 years of decline, and now thanks to CAN we are seeing it. It's still circling the drain- it hasn't completely disappeared yet.

@1 Well, there's a lot of time spent on prepping for state assessment tests, starting in third grade. There's a lot of time spent from kindergarten on on various district curricula and standards. There's about 20 minutes a day for lunch and 20 minutes for playground.

I'm really upset about Buckman. I feel like the district is trying to get rid of all focus schools. But I'm livid about what they did to Tubman and Humboldt -- they just outright shut them down last month which is bullsh*t.
