SUBSIDIES FOR SMALL TOWN PEOPLE THAT HATE TO PAY TAXES.

The reason the USPS has a budget gap is a 2006 law that requires them to prepay 100% of forecasted pension and retiree health care costs in advance. You know, like no private companies have to do? This is a requirement put in place by people who want to kill the USPS because the government... something. These cuts would be unnecessary if the prefunding went away.

You should probably know this. It's a pretty big deal, if you've read a news article about the post office in the last 6 years.

Is there anything that the power of Ben Gibbard's music can't do?

Then again, the post office would largely be unnecessary if a) private businesses were allowed to do first class mail, and b) first class mail was priced properly and discounts weren't given to junk mailers to fill up my recycling bin. For some reason if a tree is killed to SPAM me, that's okay, but if some data drops into my Inbox or someone dials me up on the phone unsolicited, it's outrageous.

Email and Facebook, coupled with FedEx and UPS, has already largely eliminated the need for the USPS. Let it die already.

“I’ve been quite open about this around the office: I don’t want this parks department to build any parks, because I don’t believe in government. I think that all government is a waste of taxpayer money. My dream is to have the park system privatized and run entirely for profit by corporations, like Chuck E. Cheese. They have an impeccable business model. I would rather work for Chuck E. Cheese.”

The real issue is the GOP forced the USPS to fund their retirement fund for the *next 75 years.*

No private company, no UPS, no FedEx could do this. The USPS was forced to fund retirements for future employees who haven't even been born yet.

It's insane.

If you take out the crazy GOP attack, the USPS has a surplus. It actually makes money. Why? Because people use it.

Sorry, rich folks. Americans aren't all moneybags. And USPS is cheaper and more efficient than for-profit corporations.

The real attack is by the GOP trying to kill the USPS to pass along billions of dollars in revenue to their corporate overlords.

This 6 minute video is slightly annoying but it has decent info on what's really happening with the GOP's attack on the USPS.

And whether the topic is banking and Wall Street or Healthcare, it really seems like privatization virtually never works and costs us a lot more in the long run.
