You know, if you're already not able to pay vendors and staff, you're effectively out of business. Even if...HEY! Let's put on a SHOW! works, it still sounds like you've got shit right now that you can't pay, much less pay for in the future. I've seen this one too many times.
It is hypocritical for a cooperative cafe and community space to turn to their voluntary supporters to help pay off their mortgage and continue operating -- I just know it is. For some reason. What do they think they are, a church or something? If they're going to sell food, they need to make lots of profits. Then I can call them hypocritical for being capitalists or something.
@2 Yeah, you don't know, but if you did, and it went your way, you might have the basis for a good one-liner. Good one! The idea of people running a workplace themselves sure irks some people. And now I'm off to mainline some LSD.
I'm with geyser, there's no hypocrisy here. While I would definitely be too concerned about the future viability of a cafe that asks for 20K from it's patrons to donate, I'm not one of their patrons. For all you market-huggers, you win either way - either they don't raise the money and shut down, or they raise the money and prove the demand exists, and the continuing viability of new techniques to get needed capital from regular people to small businesses. So relax.
I like their food and cooperative business model and their unpopular (at least on the Blogtown) opinions about police. I did think their remodel and building buying was overly ambitious. Bad idea. I'll be sad to see the place go. Excellent Tempeh Reuben and coffee.
Two months later, and the Red & Black just posted an update saying that because of all the donations and increased business pouring in, they're 25% of the way to their $20,000 goal.
Also @2 <--- this, lol
Also, golf clap for #12.
Good riddance.
