I turned this episode off about halfway through. Right after that stupid fucking thing with Alison Pill being followed up with that stupid fucking thing about Emily Mortimer being unable to send email. Lots of folks all over internetland today are talking about the basic, shit-dumb sexism at the heart of those two plot bombs. And again, that shaky handheld cam just further underlines how annoying this show is.

I haven't run into anyone who claims to love this show. The one thing I guess I could hope for is that it will suddenly change tone in its third or fourth ep (like 'Girls'), but I don't think Mister Sorkin does that.

YES! What is up with the email thing? I can only assume the scene was meant to imply one of two things: 1) Women (even wildly successful ones) am too dumb to grasp technology, or 2) Only the stupidest company in the world would hire a tech person who would devise such an impenetrable email system.

Oh, there is a third idea: Aaron Sorkin is a dumb technophobe.

The first time she failed to send an email correctly, I found it confusing even outside of the li'l sexism problem (a TV producer doesn't know how to send an email? okey doke)—but then I thought maybe I wasn't giving the show enough credit, and that she had sent it to everyone on purpose to be funny/mean. NOPE! I think it's kind of a bad show, but I am also sort of enjoying the way in which it's bad, and I'll probably keep watching.

The email thing was fucking moronic. I sort of wanted to stab that detail in the eye.

However, I'm enough of an idiotic Sorkin fanboy (maybe because I never suffered through Studio 60) to keep watching for another episode or two. Calling it comfort food is spot on, and Sorkin does get a whole lot of mileage out of congratulating his viewers for being oh-so-fucking enlightened. But, it's a hollow and tired trick that sort of works on me. Expressing a heartfelt dedication to truth and justice while a soul-fluffing Radiohead song plays in the background? I'll eat that shit up. However, I'll also kind of hate myself after doing so.

You know, I kind of liked 'Studio 60.' Its first episode was awesome, and so were some of the others, but you just can't treat a comedy sketch show like the White House, and it looks dumb when you try.

I'll keep watching this show as long as I can keep watching it live with Alison Hallett. The derision is palpable.

We should show The Newsroom at a bar, with Alison sitting next to the big screen, shaking her head in disgust.

Please wait...
