It's pretty much the same story Portland's had for the last 15 years or so: There's an influx of people from somewhere else who have advanced degrees and disposable income, while the home-grown people get substandard educations and piss-poor services.

The City's unstated policy for dealing with a miserable economy is to encourage gentrification and push low-income people further toward the city limits. Eventually we'll be able to avoid the issue of income inequity altogether.

Then, once Portland becomes an enclave of the wealthy, City Hall will pat itself on the back and 'Slate' will report what a great success story we are.

That article reads like Ygelesias hung out with some local creatives, ate at a food truck and rode a bike around for a day or two and came to the conclusion that Portland is doing just fine. There's nothing in there that passes for intelligent analysis.
