What it represents --beyond just a gaffe by Mitt --is the attempt to move the Republican Party from being defined as an "anti-tax" Party and shifting it to being an "anti-tax on the wealthy" Party.
That is, they need a way to get the working poor to believe that increasing taxes on the poor is a good idea.
Sounds politically suicidal, but at this point nothing's beyond the Rove machine's capacity. if they can make W look Presidential they can make people believe anything.
