Be nice to raise some funds for employees, but didn't the owners have property damage and business interruption insurance?

@BG, they probably did, as most landlords require it of a commercial tenant.

However, even if they did, don't ever assume an insurance company is going to promptly roll over and pay the owners' claim in full, and as you point out, there is no coverage for the laid off employees.
