You wouldn't want to get the public actually thinking about what is underlying all of our money (hint: nothing).

If they watch the Treasury invent a trillion dollars out of thin air simply by stamping it on a piece of metal, they might start thinking about the real underlying value of that piece of paper in the wallet with a "100" stamped on it. Or all of those 1's and 0's in your bank's computer that they assure you are worth something.
