Paul, the big blinking hint as to why he's not doing anything about the penny is in the few words you already highlighted. There are far bigger problems. If you're the President, and you choose to take on an "eliminate the penny" campaign during a time when there are much bigger priorities in this country, how does that make you look? Like a completely out-of-touch dick. There's your answer.
