The timeline isn't made very clear, but as I understand it she COULD read and write just fine, up until her condition worsened and she lost the ability - with just two classes to go before graduation. So the school made special arrangements for her in those classes, like oral exams and alternative assignments. The article is very angry with the school for not teaching her braille. But geez - if I just had two classes to go, I'd want to do exactly what she did, and just get through it.
