I'm too surprised. I think it's because Liberace is still an icon and I think many studio heads don't like these sorta kiss and tell books.
After all, you have to more than bankable stars, you have one of the hottest directors in town. Really, if they wanted to make a movie for general release they could have even a well financed indie.
In some ways it's probably better that HBO got them.
