I'm super relieved to hear that Oblivion is kind of good. I was ashamed of myself for wanting to see it after watching the trailer. Too bad it stars Tom Cruise though -- it might have done better in sci-fi crowds without him.
I liked about 80 percent of Oblivion, and I really liked about 40 percent of it a LOT. I'm really curious to hear what other people make of it, as it does straddle an awkward gap between mainstream action blockbuster and arty, broody, emo-sci-fi (both of which can be great on their own terms). I suspect it will fizzle, but it doesn't deserve to.
In other words, pretty much everything Erik already said.
Oblivion pulls off the great sci fi trick of being visceral and thought provoking while also being incredibly derivative of other, better films. I loved it, but it's hard to say if there was an original thought in there.
