What is a college administration supposed to do about anonymous online comments?

Exactly this.

I'm an old guy in my thirties so I don't know anything about Yik Yak works...but how do they know it's even people at the college posting this anonymously? Anyone in a five mile radius can see and post? A five mile radius from Lewis and Clark includes everywhere from downtown Portland to most of SE to places in east Clackamas County to all the way to Tigard and Washington County.

Those anonymous comments are almost as bad as the average Oregonian comments section. But trolls are going to troll.

Those comments are terrible. I haven't used that app before, though. Can you tell if it's more than one person? And can you tell if it's a student, or someone local?

So I just checked out Yik Yak myself for the first time--within a minute I was able to post in what appeared to be the PSU "herd"(not a PSU student). So basically anyone can sign up for Yik Yak and if Lewis and Clark is the closest college to their location be making all kind of stupid anonymous comments within seconds seen by Lewis and Clark students.

How is that the school's responsibility though? There's all kinds of people making racist one-off comments on the interwebs...

Just a hunch, but I'm betting that the commenters here questioning why the university needs to do anything are all . . . white.

Please wait...
