At this point, maybe it's the natives that should leave. At least us transplants (8 great years and counting!) actually still _like_ this city.
2
I know it! It's these damned "natives" that keep bitching and whining about how miserable this city it!

Wait - by natives, do you mean White people or Native Americans? B/c clearly, one was here FIRST.

CORRECTED

Alright, i stand corrected. Nice catch.

You can thank me for making a more astute commenter out of you. This way, we ALL benefit.

With such a healthy attitude, I sure wanna be your friend and go hang out for a beer and conversation.

Y'know, I'm fine with what Portland grew to be since I've been here, but I continue to wonder about where all these people came from who spend so much of their time acting like minor annoyances are somehow life-threatening crises.
7
Thanks for putting in the part about the glasses. I was afraid I was the one who was ruining Portland, but I wear contacts. Phew.
8
Pixies t-shirt? What year do you think this is? Do people really still wear such an item?
9
Seriously, don't call me "man."

I love the venom that posts like this stir up. For some reason a lot of folks take umbrage or feel threatened when it gets pointed out how this town hasn't always been inundated with people desperate to fit in with what is considered trendy. Especially the shitbirds who readily jump in with the anti-"nativist" meme. I believe OP mentioned that they moved here from somewhere else at one point. For decades, this town had been a welcoming destination for those that were of a mind to put down roots and get to know the place. Pride in the history of this locale is not limited to the "natives"- whether they came across the Bering Strait, the Oregon Trail or I-84.
But I tend to agree with the general sentiment of I,A. I'm sure many nice folks can be counted among those who have moved here in recent years/ But the sad reality is Portland wasn't chock full of full desperately hip/indie/lameparodyofitself-types until the last few years.
11
Yes, but so the fuck what?
12
@10, agree, and I love the clowns the get defensive about being "that guy".....it's the Portland Mercury, probably half the readers are that guy. Incidentally most Native American cultures did not recognize land "ownership", and btw referencing the "Native " thing is tired and played out DaDaA you shit brained little troll...go back to community college you loser

"Incidentally most Native American cultures did not recognize land "ownership", and btw referencing the "Native " thing is tired and played out..."

So, what you're saying is that committing mass genocide against Native Aboriginals b/c YOU claim that they didn't recognize land "ownership" is perfectly ok?
14
Seriously, just shut the fuck up.

I've lived here since I was 10. Portland has evolved exactly into what people wanted it to be 10 years ago and now everyone is acting all pissed off. It's just another form of social elitism. One-uppery if you will.

A group of hipsters points to another group of hipsters and says "look at those fucking hipsters!"

You're posting on the Merc site. You are obviously hip enough to read a weekly alternative magazine.

And thick glasses are comfy. They don't have those annoying little plastic pad things. Call me crazy, but I like comfort and a wider range of vision.

You should see my home town.

Please wait...
