so it's cool if gay men talk this way to each other?

also, i hate to point out the obvious. but, using an anonymous forum on a weekly alternative newspaper's blog, is a bit juvenile.

The 1st paragraph here is totally valid, the 2nd not so much. Seems like she's propping up her personal preferences with the social weight of questionable norms about what's appropriate behavior for hetero males. And since when do women want a guy they're dating to talk to them just like he would to his guy friends? And I'm pretty sure LOL goes back to the days of usenet, when Anon was still learning to write.
But yes, the constant slang and abbreviations have annoyingly spread from the internet to other communication and gotten out of hand to the point that anyone under 40 who just speaks something like standard English can be seen as square or uptight. So it's understandable that people old enough for it to be unseemly go around saying "whatevs" "I'm so down with that" "chillax" etc. all the time.

This I,A is infantile enough to not give response.

:( IF YOU'RE IN YOUR THIRTIES, DON'T REFER TO YOURSELF AS A 'GIRL'. YOU ARE AN ADULT.

LOL

but this I,A is a meehh :(

Yes, the subtle nuances of modern communication have eluded you. You think it is a failing of others but in truth the failure is yours.

Typical.

I see her [overall] point about adults becoming more infantile - it's an argument i've been making for several years, now. And it's largely this sort of "adult baby" behavior that drove me to quite facebook recently.

But i just don't see why she's heaping all of this on MEN. Clearly, women are every bit as guilty. Do all of her lady friends not text her in the same nauseating manner???
18
Damn this woman sounds like she's 30 going on 92. If an emoticon puts you off, the problem is all you.

I hate the constant reassurance of the "lol" and emoticon thing, but I get that that's exactly what it is -- reassurance. When you're dating someone, especially early on, you may not have each other's tone down pat, especially over the pretty tone-deaf medium of texting, and by using those cues, he's probably trying to soften anything he fears you might misinterpret.

Basically, you probably scare him, and judging by your reaction, that's probably not entirely unreasonable.

:(

Fuck you, lady. I have a goddamn degree in Philosophy, and I'm probably at LEAST 50 times smarter than you, AND all your rich, dumb, hipster friends. I'll use all the cheesy emoticons and puerile, sub-literate acronyms I want!

LOL BITCH. :D :) :P

And IA, let me just add; you're "in your thirties with a college degree (in what? Since whatever you have a degree in isn't working, so you went back), and a full time job (please enlighten us, I know people that pump gas full time)". If you lack the 'wherewithal' to understand text messages, you are going to have a fucking hard time moving forward in our Brave New World.

Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth. Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof.

Dear anon,
Shut the fuck up.

I have a very high I.Q.
25
Pshh... this "advice" is universal. There are plenty of idiot females out there who do the exact same thing. In fact, from my experience, I would say that females do this more.
26
Chicken-head freak, you're lucky I texted you in the first place!

What I find funny is that this alleged 'women' is complaining about emoticons, but yet she has major grammatical errors in her rant. And all this coming from a college graduate! Truly pathetic.

Please wait...
