I was born in Portland. Portland is my home and always will be. Let's just get that out of the way. I am also an independent voter. I'm not right-wing and I support many moderate positions. What I take strong exception to is this new breed of liberal that does nothing but lie and try to divert attention away from liberal failures instead of outright taking responsibility for them. Sam Adams lied to get elected and what did Portland "progressives" do? Nothing at all. All because Adams is gay. That is just as despicable as Westboro Baptist Church saying God hates fags. These are extremist examples of what is wrong with our city, state and country now. Liberals and conservative both have a hand in this mess but liberals are just flat-out lying about it. I'm squarely in the middle on many issues and I think it's time that liars get the message that only the truth matters. When you have liars trying to sway public opinion as opposed to properly leading us to prosperity, I'm going to have a problem with it. Portland deserves better than liars and apathetic scumbags trying to smokescreen the truth. I won't be voting for any liberals any time soon because of the outright, despicable lies. @11 -- I can't speak for everyone, but I think that the "loyalty" one feels for their home-town is really not something you can control. If you grow up in the same place you will have a lot of memories, emotional attachment to said place, etc.

I don't really understand obsessively rooting for things like sports teams, but I think that feeling an unconditional love for the place you grew up is a bit different than that.

Actually, Portland's done pretty well for itself these past few decades, especially in comparison to many other cities in the nation. You might be exaggerating the failures, stjohnsrules.

Jobs. Schools. Homelessness. Occupy crime. Gang crime. Illegal immigrant Sanctuary City (I'd call the reckless killing of John Zupan an absolute failure). And today is the first day of summer. You know, there is a great deal about my home city that I love, but it would be better if people like you, ROM, actually woke the fuck up and quit dismissing the problems we all face as neighbors. Minimizing our problems will never have a positive outcome.
