Smokers already know smoking causes cancer. This is not news to anyone.

It is the other way around, they (smokers) are wishing it on themselves. Cancer from smoking cigarettes is avoidable. Other cancers are clearly not as avoidable, so there's a major difference here in your comparison.

WS. Point taken. My reasoning was that not everyone who smokes is an evil doing, society hating menace, as the IA'er seems to imply. There are nurses, doctors, accountants, volunteer workers, who smoke. My own mom smoked for a gazillion years and died from ovarian cancer. Sure smoking is avoidable, but the brashness of "die already" is unacceptable and frankly more sociopathic than the action of throwing a butt into the street.
