Ok IA, so what I gleamed from this is that you were walking along having a bad fucking day. A few young people who just happen to have been skateboarding told you that they thought your boots were cool.

But rather than simply take a nice compliment, you had a shit-fit, ran home, got mad over nothing some more, and proceeded to mash out this hysterical rant of yours. Do I have that right?

I think it's clear she felt harassed, not complimented. A compliment implies politeness.

A few men have hollered at me in a way that actually felt complimentary. It can be done! It helps a lot if you're walking away as you make your comment. Makes it clear that you're not trying to get anything out of the interaction: just being genuinely nice.
