I never hesitate to call people out about this one in real time because it is indeed so damn annoying. It's lots of fun to see the kind of jackoff who uses that construction suddenly have to defend their word choice, which they never thought they'd have to do.
"It says to me "I think whatever I am asking you about is insignificant or not important.""
I'm glad to hear that the message is getting through. That's almost exactly what I mean when I refer to something as "your little [whatever]." I would only add that when I say it I also mean that, "I understand that you think it's important, and that fact is also not important to me." You can knock it's use all you like, but that's a lot of meaning being effectively conveyed by just one word. Gotta love efficiency!
"Oh, is your little art gallery thing happening this weekend?"
So, is it? That's so cute. You go. I'm sure your found objects, mixed media masterpieces, the subtle moroseness of your quaint illustrations and Lomo/Holga snapshots will make you the songbird of your generation.
My partner calls everything "little." At first I thought it was condescending, but he even uses it to describe his own stuff/events/etc. It's a quirk that I think is cute (of course). So keep that little thought in mind before getting too upset.
