Yes, this discussion about dental health has been almost as irritating as every other thing that is discussed-to- death, all-the-time, year-after-year.

How stupid to get off topic from: who's to blame for the bad economy and gun control and gay marriage.
2
I once had hemorrhoids, that is why I'm voting no.
3
@altogether

Most cities aren't debating fluoride, much less "to death".
4
There's problems, then there's white people problems, then there's Portland problems.
5
@ Aestro You're right, most are just getting rid of it, or regarding it as antiquated as ye olde food pyramid and going a better way.
6
Let's recap the last 24 hours on the Mercury blogs: "snarky Seattle Sloggers are larfing at you anti-fluoridation types!" "Somebody's sorry they even agreed we should have a vote!"

Y'all's arms must be aching from all that flailing (or at least your posting fingers).
7
(Sorry, but I've always wanted to use "y'all's" in a comment. Bucket list and all that.)
8
"That opposite"? You are not helping genius.
9
At first I was mad as all heckfire when I heard about this fluoridation claptrap... But at the same time, it's not like the old days when Portland focused on issues that really mattered--issues like opposing the effort to rename a street for Cesar Chavez or the time the Univeristy of Oregon/Nike tried to take over the Made in Oregon sign...
10
Me, too, Anony! Me, too. I now know regret.
11
Personally, I refuse to sign any petition, even for things I probably agree with. Why? Because direct democracy is a terrible way for the government to make specific decisions.
12
When the petitioners try to feed me a line that I know is crap I refuse to sign it. Supporting it on a ballot is just kicking the bullshit can a little further along. I consider not supporting the petition as my first vote.
13
Torgo, the diplomat: "Because direct democracy is a terrible way for the government to make specific decisions."

That's just a sweethearted way of saying that most of us are too stupid to be allowed to have a say in most matters.

Yeah, you're right. I wish you weren't, but you are.
14
I've never been so in agreement with I,A commenters as I am right now... and yet I feel so... empty...
15
Can we start a petition to get a street named after any of Cesar Chavez's children? Did he have any? Were they even decent people? Does it even matter?

Anything other than this flouridation shit. I'm about ready to walk into traffic while slitting my neck with one hand and shooting myself with the other. And I'd be smiling, just about.
16
You're a moron if you think signing a petition equals a vote.
17
'only'sane...
signing the stupid petition enabled the stupid vote.
splitting hairs aren't we?
18
frankie say relax. no need for vote, ok?
19
'Representative Government'.... blah blah blah

Yeah, it would be a shame if Sam & Randy didn't get the opportunity to retroactively gild their own shabby reputations. I mean, seriously, fuck those guys and fuck them even harder for trying to railroad this thing through without a vote.

"Science" aside (oh how I laugh at the "I fucking love Science!" crowd in this debate), fuck this measure simply because the initial effort was designed to be 100% closed-door, illegal, and pretty fucking anti-democratic in my opinion.

That someone gave a shit, stood up for us all and made a vote happen is reason enough to reject this feel-good reputation-bolstering shitshow. Good riddance Sam and good riddance Randy! It's fucking sad that they have to invoke the usual "please save the children" histrionics, and even sadder that the pseudointellectual do-gooders aren't willing to admit that their newly-formed opinion's just a product of the pro-fluoride lobby. Oh, whoops, did I point out that 95% of you had no horse in this race prior to all the vomit-inducing emotional appeals hitting the airwaves? So sorry.

This is Portland so it's very much important to get in line with the prevailing white middle class groupthink, lest be ostracized. Ha! Now tell me what else we can do to elevate the poor people and civilize the savage minorities while simultaneously sending them packing towards east county.
21
Portland loves process, unless the process is inconvenient. Flouride is plentiful, available and cheap. Go buy some, put it on your teeth. Leave it out of my water. I don't care about your fucking studies. It is unnecessary and a waste of money, plus it might be harmful.

Don't you dipshits get it? We don't want to be forcefed anything. Nor should we be. Fuck off.
22
Demondog: that's very proud and noble of you, especially by ending by calling people who disagree with you "dipshits". But I think the point here should be that the fluoride debate is not only paranoid but relatively unimportant (you seem to agree-- "might be harmful" is pretty soft). The level of debate has been extraordinarily low, but high volume. I still have no horse in this stupid assholes' race.

What do you think about Oregon taking 1st place in rate of vaccine-exempt children this year? I think THAT is a problem.

I won't copy you and say "fuck off"-- but how about you focus your fucked-ass mind on something that matters?
23
" I think the point here should be that the fluoride debate is not only paranoid but relatively unimportant"

Paranoid are the people wanting to modify a perfectly good water system.

Unimportant it is. So why are people pushing so hard to put this shit in?

It's pretty amazing to me in this debate how the anti-fluoride people keep getting painted as the paranoid, loonies. The fluoride loonies started it and are the ones crying the loudest.

PRO: WE MUST DO THIS NOW NOW NOW NOW!

ANTI: Uh, this is dumb, let's not do it.

PRO: AHAHAH AL DLKFJD BLAL BLB ASLB THE CHILDREN THE CHILDREN WLKBJB B LB SAB LAB WERE ALL GONNA GET TOOTH HURT AND CHILRDEN CHILDREN, DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE CHILDREN?????!!!!!!!!

If we're gonna put something in the water here how about some vitamin D first, then we'll talk about fluoride. And not put it in, again, because it's dumb. OK?
24
There's already chemicals in our water system, our water isn't pure in the slightest. You're pretty much an idiot if you think so.

Please wait...
