Yeah, the gift card is something someone paid for, presumably. Voiding it before it's done is basically theft.
It sucks that you didn't get tipped and people that don't tip are assholes, but part of the job is that sometimes you get screwed and just have to roll with it.
Also, it's going to end up coming back as a pain in the ass for you or one of your co-workers when the owner of the card comes back in.
At first I thought you meant he took off without paying. Then I realized you meant he didn't tip. Aestro's right, voiding the gift card was theft. Title should be changed to "When two assholes meet."
You suck. You're being paid to make sandwiches, you get a tip if you've made an exceptionally amazing sandwich with a smile and made your customer feel good. Instead you admittedly were running around frantic because you couldn't handle the "rush", you couldn't handle YOUR JOB. You then stole from your customer after giving them your shitty service. You suck.
Getting tired of reading all these anons that believe working a behind-the-counter job is just an acceptable form of pan-handling. Its bullshit. Do your job first and then maybe you'll get a tip. Maybe.
First: As noted above, you suck. You also probably committed a crime.
Second: a general question about tipping. I live on the side of the river where we pump our own gas. Lately, when I've had occasion to fuel up in Oregon, after the attendant is done, they hand me my receipt and "linger" for a bit. Am I supposed to tip them for this "service"?
The transaction was cancelled when card was voided. Standard move to inconvenience some asshole. No way any idiot would do that unless it was their last day and they were that hard up for cash.
And never tip for counter service unless it's glowing.
I once got stiffed on a 200+ bar tab when I was a bartender. I guess the difference, apart from the amount of the bill, is that working at a little coffee house is 100 times nicer/easier than working at any given bar. Your hours are better, it's far cushier because your worst customer is simply a coffee snob and not some raging drunk, and you're not always expecting the giant orders you had today; if you were to always expect that, I suppose you wouldn't be babbling on about those inconvenient cookies you had to make during the middle of a treacherous rush because it'd be 'just another day at the coffee shop'. It's hard to feel bad when you, as others have stated above, took to being an even greater tool by allegedly voiding a gift card. You don't think people aren't going to catch on to that shit? Spite can do many things, but it isn't bringing you the tip you so obnoxiously think you deserve.
Yeah I hope that guy rips your fucking face off because in the end this is a huge deal.........right? Anyway, dickhead disgruntled Portland service workers pull bullshit like this all the time, you're not special or clever anon.

With prices like that in a little coffee shop, you should ask the owner for a raise and not expect gratuities for a non table serving gig.
