If you truly love your animal, you will give it away to someone who can take better care of it, because you can't afford it yourself. That advice will cost you $100 a minute.
2
Who put a SCUD missile to your head and made you rent from someone charging a pet fee?

Strive? Yeah, that would be a compelling film. A person strives to own a home. When does Scorsese start filming?
3
I've often dreamed of owning a cat rental business but my landlord has this ridiculous 5 cat rule. Alas the idea simply doesnt scale.

I agree with this rant. Rental property owners in Portland never had it so good. With occupancy rates so low, rents skyrocketing and no sign of the hipster pilgrimage to Portland slowing down, not only can they get away with pet rent but they get pet rent ON TOP OF the huge pet deposit -- most demanding a separate deposit per pet.
5
Anyone who wants to side with landlords in this town is a fool. Trash your apartment now!
6
Pet rent is not new.
7
Why is the owner of the property 'entitled' anyway?

What a cheap shot, and lazy critisism.

Your IP address and rant has been pinged to all the portland mercury landlords (yes all of them and they own 29% of all rentals in this hipster kingdom)

Good luck now dipstick....you blewwww it!

They cook and eat their renters animals at an annual "wing" cook off over by I-5 in the summer.

Dalmatians are kinda tasty btw....

I would agree with this rant, but 1) on average, renters with pets probably fuck properties up more than those without 2) suppy and demand, dumbass, and 3) use of the word "entitled".

IA, sorry you missed the news than having another mouth to feed is always more expensive. but maybe this will prevent you from procreating without budgeting properly. Good practice!

I agree with this rant 100%! "Pet rent" is bogus. That is what a security deposit (typically, w/ an extra pet deposit on top) is for.

You just need to make your pet get a job. There ain't no free rides here.

My cat washes dishes at a Mexican Restaurant. I make the little motherfucker show me his check stubs too. Those damn Mexicans always try to drag his ass out salsa dancing on paydays and then he comes home broke a day later with no rent money trying to tell me he got rolled by the cops for not having tags on his collar.

Nobody's forcing you to live in a desirable part of a trendy town, are they?

didn't think so

I have to try to get rid of cat urine smell, or pee-stained wood floors after your one-year-leased ass can't take the rain or find a job and moves back to New Jersey with your 6 animals. No way do I want to rent to you! I will do everything I can to legally discriminate against your animals with outrageous fees! You think I want to piss off my well-to-do neighbors while your dog barks all day and night? If they move to another part of town, my rent prices go DOWN.

i was once a renter with a dog. i sang her praises to all potential landlords and crated her while i was at work. i finally found a rental home that accepted us both. within a month of moving in, and to my total chagrin, my sweet pup tore up a huge patch of newly installed carpet. of course, i immediately paid to have it fixed but damn! looking back i can't believe how lucky i was to find rentals that accepted my dog without extra charges before i finally bought my own place, though i would have gladly paid extra for the pet-friendly housing. landlords take a huge risk against their investment by allowing animals and i don't think it's unfair to ask for extra fees to cover any potential damage, pest infestations, odors, etc.

Does nobody know the law? This was put in like two years ago:

ORS 90.530(2)(a): A landlord may not charge a one-time, monthly or other periodic amount based on the tenants possession of a pet.
16
I don't see what the problem is. Some of us don't want the responsibility of owning a pet full time. Some of us just want to rent a puppy so we can pick up women at the dog park.

rainbowwine,

It appears that law is in regards to facilities such as mobile home parks or floating home marinas.

"Notwithstanding a change in the rules and regulations of a manufactured dwelling or floating home facility that would prohibit pets, a tenant may keep a pet that is otherwise legally living with the tenant at the time the landlord provides notice of the proposed change to the rules and regulations of the facility"

Please wait...
