To answer your question...they grind pepper over my salad.

You're totally in the right though, service at the Home Depot is usually head and shoulders above most of the spots I lunch at.

Solid point.

^ fuck you colonel.

Also, where are you home lowes depot personnel when I have a simple question like: where is the toilet plungers? I rode a bus all the way out here with serious bowel issues almost getting into a fight, and non of you guys who fornicate with your own mothers are available?! -also, your mens room toilet paper is like the least absorbent thing i ever used.

And now you want a tip?

Here's a tip: Applebee's is hiring and voting me down is mandatory if you made it this far. Bitch 👀

^I hate to go to large hardware stores like home depot, lowes or whatever other ones like them. They run away and say will be back in a minute, and get lost in the back warehouse hiding room. If you find a store employee willing to help, they are not able to understand your question. They run away and send someone that is a corny older person that is one step away from a child molestor.

The walk around the monster store is hideous, and by the time you find your item, you need a nap and have muscle cramps. I hate it when they say "what can I do for you little lady?"
SO NO TO THE TIPS FORKLIFT DRIVER.

If you start serving beer at the hardware store I will definitely start leaving a tip.

You're not getting tips? Have you tried drawing a smiley face on the receipt? I'd try drawing a smiley face on the receipt.

Tips exist because traditionally (and still in places outside of Oregon) servers don't get paid a living wage by their employers - the shithead restaurant owners put that responsibility on the customers so that they can make a better profit. Tipping for service makes no sense in Oregon, because servers have the same minimum wage that everybody else does.

Check out this map though: http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm

See how much of the country is blue? Those are the places where servers can get as little as $2.13/hour. Note that these also happen to be states where people don't consider tipping 15-20% the norm (which believe it or not, most Portlanders do). Why do you think everyone moves here to work in the service industry? Proper minimum wage + better tips than most of the country sees.

As a bartender, I totally get this. I'm tired of the bitching about tips in this city. To all the poor servers who expect tips than call people sub-human for only laying down a 10% tip on their service need to accept that a tip is something extra, not a given. Get over yourselves, please.
13
That's it! I'm tipping everyone from here on out, this being a consumer-based economy and all.

@ FWTBT...

Thanks for that link. That should provide valuable perspective to all the spoiled service industry employees here in PDX. Unfortunately, to gain that perspective, they would need to do math that involves more thinking than 20% x Check Total = What I deserve.

Here's some interesting math...

A server/bartender working 40hrs/wk makes $364 from their hourly wage alone. If they work at a halfway decent establishment, they should average about $100/night in tips. That equals approximately $864/wk, or roughly $45,000/yr.

Given that at least 20-25% of that tip money is in cash, roughly $8,500 of their pay doesn't get taxed. At their tax bracket (probably 22-24% total between City/State/Fed), their take home pay is about $3200/month.

For a true salaried position, you would need to make a little over $55,000/year to enjoy that kind of take home pay.

Now these figures obviously can vary depending on where you work or how much you work, but it's a pretty safe baseline for a FT server or bartender. Frankly, bartenders probably make considerably more than this as would a server working in a high end restaurant.

All you spoiled servers and bartenders (not the reasonables ones of course), need to realize that you have it way better here in Portland than you would in almost any other state in America.

I have tipped Home Depotees, when they help me load mulch or carry timber, but like Seentomuch says, generally you can't find help. Not snooping into your base pay I/anon, but I'll bet it's quite a bit better than a waitperson.
16
Ive done both Anon, and you have a point. Of course we get paid more than a server or bartender, hence the need for tips. Still, they DO get paid to work

Rick - People in food service in this town pretty much never work more than 25 or 30 hours a week. Why do you think they're all on the tips tip? It's the only way to pay rent while refusing to work full time!

Please wait...
