This is a big deal: The Oregon Department of Education on Thursday formally laid out a wide-ranging series of protections for transgender students in state schools, including rules that transgender boys, for instance, are allowed to use the boys' bathroom, and that transgender girls can participate on girls' sports teams. There's no indication what happens if school districts defy the guidelines (beyond open themselves up to legal trouble).

That ballot you've received in the mail by now (if you haven't gotten one, call county elections officials) has a 10-cent Portland gas tax on it. Commissioner Steve Novick, who's pushing that tax, is concurrently trying to tax trucking companies for their abuse of city streets. They're not pleased—and make an argument that the plan is inherently unfair.

The weeks-long kerfuffle between cops and their citizen watchdogs is over, it appears. After pulling a no-show recently, cops returned to a meeting of the city's Citizen Review Committee on Wednesday. And they even convinced the committee an officer had properly roughed up a citizen!

"I assume you're going to get elected," Anderson told the mayoral frontrunner. "I do, too," Wheeler answered. The O's got a big Ted Wheeler profile out today. The candidate, it seems, is already mentally redecorating the third floor of City Hall.

Not enough for you? OPB just did one, too.

One more time, Portland: Don't shoot at the kids who egged your house.

Tragedy in Southwest Portland, where a young construction worker was buried alive when the trench he was digging collapsed around him.

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE DONALD TRUMP
(?!?!:-(?!? ) won't be visiting the Portland metro area tomorrow after all, which means the only shot you have at beholding the swift, violent death of this once-proud nation in person is to schlep down to Eugene today.

Don't feel like Trump's worth the trouble? You're not alone. His party's own Speaker of the House won't even endorse him. Good on you, Paul Ryan. I don't remotely believe you'll keep it up.

Meanwhile, Bill Clinton cruised through yesterday, stumping for his wife.

To vote for these candidates, or perhaps their fading challengers, a record 110,000 Oregon voters switched their party affiliations ahead of this year's primary. But with Trump a pretty clear victor in the Republican race, it's not all that likely those numbers will translate into record turnout.

A REMINDER: Here are the local candidates you should vote for.

Back in the day, when I was a Michigan four-year-old, this song was The Shit. Has Oregon ever come up with one that can top it? I'm honestly curious.
