An hour ago, Agalloch fans got some sad news via the band's Facebook page. The Portland-based metal band announced they are calling it a day:

Following 20 years, 5 full length albums, many tours around the world, and numerous other recordings, John Haughm and the rest of the band (Don Anderson, Jason Walton, and Aesop Dekker) have parted ways. What the future holds for the separate parties remains undetermined. We collectively thank all of our fans across the world. There are also way too many other people to thank who made this band possible. You know who you are.

This is a bummer, as Agalloch are were one of the most inventive and distinct metal bands not just in Portland but in the world. We wrote articles about them on multiple occasions, including in 2010 and 2014. Their 2010 album Marrow of the Spirit is pretty damn remarkable, and the rest of their catalog is nothing to sneeze at. (Seriously, don't sneeze at it, or anyone in general. It's just rude, and spreads germs.)

Although it's a bright sunny day, the weather's about to turn, so this weekend might be a perfect time to curl up with Agalloch's dark, elemental sound and relive the band's triumphs, many of which you can stream on their Bandcamp page. Bandleader John Haughm no doubt has more sounds up his sleeve—and who knows, may even preserve the Agalloch name, if the Facebook post is to be taken at face value—but this marks the sad end of a landmark chapter in Portland metal.
