Not surprisingly, some people are calling for Portland Public Schools Superintendent Carole Smith's job, after PPS revealed it bungled its response to high lead readings in drinking fountains at two schools.

A cyclist was struck and killed in Southwest Portland yesterday. Alcohol was a factor, cops said this morning. They've arrested a 61-year-old man.

It was certainly a factor when a Portland fire inspector crashed his city-owned car over the weekend in Clackamas County.

There have been three officer-involved shootings in the Portland area in recent weeks, though none in the city itself. The latest: Cops killed an armed 70-year-old man in Tualatin yesterday, after he reportedly wouldn't stop trying to break into a neighbor's home.
