The Hansen Building, a new homeless shelter Multnomah County

Good morning, Portland.

ICYMI: "There's (Finallly) A Homeless Shelter Coming to East Portland." The Hansen Building, the now-former home of the county sheriff's office, is being converted to house 200 homeless adults at NE 122nd Ave. and Glisan Street. The plan is not without controversy, though, as county commissioners Diane McKeel and Loretta Smith laid out a host of problems withe building like that there are no sprinklers or smoke detectors on the two main floors, poor water supply, less-than-ideal bathrooms, and there's no kitchen or food prep area.

You should check out this week's feature story, out in print now, on the Portland bowling scene: "So maybe bowling isn’t necessarily becoming less social as league play declines—it’s just that the nature of that social activity is changing. Places like Punch Bowl and Grand Central are popular because they offer dark lounge settings, corporate events, and are more welcoming to people who’re just looking to hang out. But is there a way for bowling alleys to accommodate these casual players as well as longtime league players? A new alley in Portland is hoping to strike that balance."

The victim in this case, 32-year-old Philando Castile, was shot to death in front of his girlfriend and a small child as he was reaching for his driver's license. Before he was shot and killed, he told the police he had a concealed-carry permit. His girlfriend live-streamed the aftermath on Facebook.
