Simone Manuel won a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle in Rio yesterday, making her the first African-American woman to win an individual medal in Olympic swimming. Manuel, a student at Stanford University, tied with Canada's Penny Oleksiuk for the win.

Michael Phelps also had a historic night. He won his 22nd gold medal, in the 200-meter individual medley, and became the first swimmer to win a single event in four consecutive Olympic Games.

Two historic wins. Makes sense to include them both in one story.

Here's how San Jose's Mercury News handled that:

Smooth.

The paper has since apologized, updating their story with an apology, calling their original, shitty headline "insensitive," and replacing it with, “Stanford’s Simone Manuel and Michael Phelps make history.”

Was that so fucking hard?

The Merc screw-up comes at the end of the first week of the Rio Games, a stretch that has been filled instances of sexist, homophobic and racist media coverage.

The Chicago Tribune originally titled their story on Corey Cogdell-Unrein's bronze medal, "Wife of a Bears' lineman wins a bronze medal today in Rio Olympics," while a Daily Beast writer used Grindr to bait gay Olympians at the Games. Both outlets issued apologies, and in the case of the Beast, removed the egregious story from their website.

But let's pull focus back to where it should be Simone Manuel. Here's what the swimmer said about the importance of the win:

“I definitely think it raises some awareness and will get them inspired,” Manuel, 20, said about the significance of her accomplishment. “I mean, the gold medal wasn’t just for me. It was for people that came before me and inspired me to stay in the sport. For people who believe that they can’t do it, I hope I’m an inspiration to others to get out there and try swimming. You might be pretty good at it.”
