It's been a quick month since Mayor Charlie Hales announced he was giving Springwater Corridor campers an extra 31 days to leave before the multi-use path was cleared. But here we are again, less than a week out from what could be the most intensive campsite sweep in the city's history. It's scheduled to begin September 1.

Just like last month, activists and advocates appear to be taking steps to set up a rogue camp for a portion of the Springwater residents who are swept. This time around, though, it's got a lot more of a unicorn vibe.

Since August 12, a Facebook group calling itself Sparkleponyunicorn LLC has been using fanciful language to announce plans to build a camp for the homelessโ€”a strategy apparently similar to the "economic refugee camp" advocate groups had planned in the days preceding the original sweep date of August 1.

The messages speak of "performance activism" in which costumes are encouraged, and have culminated in a quiet call to set up a "Safe Sleep Land" on Sunday, four days before the sweeps are scheduled to take place.

The Sparkleponyunicorn group is well known among outreach groups, but no one the Mercury's reached out to will claim affiliation or ownership. Lisa Lake, one of the advocates who set up an unsanctioned camp for women on a piece of PDC property back in May, says the organizers are "a group of concerned citizens trying to get it done, once more. No agency affiliations, just volunteers."
