The long-anticipated sweep of the Springwater Corridor began yesterday, and by all accounts was a relatively subdued affair. Officials didn't demand campers leave immediately, but signaled that they'll be expected to depart the trail in coming days.

And still, there's that same sticking point, acknowledged by police spokesperson Sgt. Pete Simpson: "There is no place to tell them to go. We know that. We can't pretend we can tell them there's a place to go." In fact, it looks like at least some of the people displaced from the Springwater haven't gone very far at all.

While all this plays out, the Oregonian has a helpful and long look at the economic forces sweeping over Portland, gutting the middle class and leaving some people with no option but sleeping on the streets. There's nothing earth shaking there, but it's a well-timed and important read. So read it.

For decades, staff and students filed complaints raising red flags about a Portland Public Schools gym teacher. Now that teacher's retired—while the district's being sued over one of his alleged misdeeds—and all that inattention to red flags is bubbling to the surface. It does not look good.

But hey! PPS has new leadership. Just-hired interim Superintendent Bob McKean is pulling in $243,600.

Doug Brown's story this week on the black Gresham teen who was run down by a man with long ties to a white supremacist gang has been rocketing around the Internet, with the NY Daily News, Daily Mail, and People picking up Doug's reporting. Read it if you haven't. There's a Gofundme campaign for 19-year-old Larnell Bruce's funeral.

The window for offering comment on the US Environmental Protection Agency's plan to clean up the Willamette River shuts next week. You will be shocked to hear that some river advocates still say that plan doesn't go far enough.

“Listen, does it even matter who hacked this data?’’ That's Russian President Vladimir Putin on the hacks that laid bare internal DNC email communications. Of course, a lot of people think Russians hacked the data. Putin, calling the hack a "public service," nonetheless disavows any knowledge.

Remember Brock Turner, the Stanford swimmer who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman (who then proceeded to tear him to shreds in a long and powerful letter?) He's out of jail, after serving three months of his six-month sentence, because of course he is.

Pssst. Your cell phone's on fire. Samsung's recalling its Galaxy Note 7.

Hurricane Hermine hit the Florida coast this morning, causing lots of damage and killing one. More surprising: It's the first hurricane to touch down in Florida in a decade. (Also: Definitely should have been named Hurricane Harambe.)

Fall is here. Mixed feelings.
