Here at Mercury HQ, we like British director Ben Wheatley. A lot. "The small odd moments soon begin to mount," Andrew Wright wrote of Kill List, "creating an atmosphere that makes the scenes of gory carnage almost seem a relief." In my review of High Rise, I just kind of casually mentioned how Wheatley's "a major filmmaking talent," like that isn't, you know, a huge deal. And here's what Ned wrote about the brilliant, hilarious Sightseers:

Wheatley is one of the most powerful and intelligent filmmakers currently working. This is why a comparison to Kubrick is apt: Every shot, cut, and line of dialogue in Sightseers is purposeful, sometimes twofold or even tenfold. The shock nature of his films means the true depth of his humor and humanity isn't always readily accessible on first viewing. But it's there. Is Wheatley's outlook on mankind's inherent, animalistic barbarism a bleak one? Undoubtedly. But there's so much more to what he's doing.

In short: Any Wheatley film is worth getting excited for. But that might go double for Free Fire, which is coming out here next year, and which... well. Here. It's a red-band trailer, which means, yep, YouTube means it when they say "This video may be inappropriate for some users." But make no mistake: This looks fun.

Alongside Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and a little movie from Rian Johnson, Free Fire's at the top of my must-see list for 2017. See you then.
