As a Portlander & skeptic re Portland's ability to lead change in institutional racism, it is invaluable & with hope of genuine follow-through, to read Mayor Ted Wheeler's highlighted focus for the current incoming candidates applying to PPB Chief. That he took the time to explain why is particularly noted.

In turn, the Union does itself a huge disservice, shoring exactly the attitude that makes it hard to trust our Police Bureau as a whole. How dynamic & powerful if the Police Union instead, joined in this commitment for internal change with the Mayor, as part of their honoring & holding up the men & women who do work hard, who do put their lives on the line, and who have purposefully chosen a profession to 'protect' & 'serve' our citizens, black, brown and white. It is this kind of constant stopgap reaction of which the Police Union chose to respond with, that hurts Portland's ability to rise as a viably inclusive & culturally connected city.
