Getting stoned and going to the movies can go horribly, horribly wrong, says the idiot who will never again be able to watch Inherent Vice without having an anxiety attack. But! Sometimes it can go wonderfully, wonderfully rightโ€”and this weekend might be one of those times.

First, the new 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey that the Hollywood scored for last weekend's Kubrick on Film series will be shown for a couple of encore screenings this Saturday and Sunday. If you've somehow avoided the legitimately jaw-dropping experience of seeing 2001 on 70mm thus far, don't fuck this up! It might never happen again! The world is on fire!

Second, a film not quite as momentous and awe-inspiring as 2001 has finally gotten to the cheap theaters: At long last, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets starts at the Laurelhurst and the Academy on Friday. As a big fan of Luc Besson's The Fifth Element, I was warily looking forward to this oneโ€”any attempt to re-capture The Fifth Element's wild-eyed science-fantasy seemed like a tall order. I shouldn't have been wary: Valerian isn't perfect, but it's an insane amount of fun, stacked with hallucinogenic, candy-colored visuals, a few brilliant action sequences, and fun performances. (Forget about Dane DeHaan, who is bad; go for Rihanna and Cara Delevingne, who are good.) You probably can already tell if Valerian sounds fun to you or not. If it does, goโ€”this thing just won't be the same on your TV, no matter how high you are.
