Ah come on, it is only as historic as long as you have been a fine citizen of Portland. Remember, this is not the original saying, only the saying the last owner retrofitted the sign with. So I guess it is just an egotistical sign, which really fits in with this town. Lets all be different as long as we are all the same.
2
"Let's all be different as long as we are the same." That should be the motto of this town.
3
Keep the sign the way it is.
4
And this needed to be anonymous why? The above statement is barely worth a letter to the editor.
5
Seems like every IA is a bigger joke than the last.
6
Maybe the sign should just say "We're better than you" so we can all gripe about it.
7
When I first moved to Portland the sign said "White Stag". Then it was changed to the name of a shop that sells pinot noir (made in rednecky places like Roseburg), refrigerator magnets (made in China probably), and Pendleton blankets (made in Washington) to tourists. Don't get me wrong, I love Pendleton blankets, but what's the big deal about keeping the name on the sign?

Everyone who wants it to stay the same should put up the cash to keep it that way. The sign has changed over the years, there is no reason it should remain the same now, especially since the business Made in Oregon no longer occupies the property or pays for it.

Yeah, lame rant. What next for IA, "Sam Adams should resign"?
9
They're probably all yours. Thats why. (zing)

I agree completely with this I, Anonymous. When I first moved to Portland and saw that sign it was like seeing an incredibly cheesy "If you lived here, you'd be home" sign. It signifies the sense of humor of Portland and all of the welcoming, smiling inhabitants. To put up a college sign as it's replacement is unoriginal, uninspiring, and, in my mind, unethical. If I wanted the mondane of a college sign being one of the main attrations I would've stayed in Nebraska where their main motto is "You can't spell drunk without UNK." Besides, isn't that damn escalator ride enough of a waist of money for the college?

The Made In Oregon name is no more historic than McDonald's. The sign carries the name of a lame retail chain (one that sells crap that is not even MIO (e.g. oregon chai)). UO pays for its upkeep, so it should be able to do with the sign as it sees fit.

Go Ducks
12
It's become something of a symbol of Oregon pride, school pride is another matter all together.
13
wasn't it White Stag at one point
14
Portland has so little in the way of real landmarks or symbols of the city. The Made in Oregon sign welcomes me home every time I come back to town. It's bad enough that the Wadell's sign turned into "Hooters". Don't take the Made in Oregon sign, too. University of Oregon doesn't even have a Portland branch.
15
"And this needed to be anonymous why?"

Obviously, the poor woman/man/conscientious hermaphrodite was terrified of being dragged away by the Duckstapo.
16
Historic? It used to say "White Stag"...that was historic. Now it says "Made in Oregon" because the Made In Oregon store bought it many years ago and has been maintaining it! It costs them several hundred dollars a year (or more if I remember) to keep it working! Too funny!
17
I agree- U of O is a Eugene thing, not a Portland thing. And 'Made in Oregon', despite being a brand name, has always seemed like a punny sort of reference to Portland's citizens. Let's leave it!
18
I'm a full time employee at PSU, and I'm all for U of O getting the sign. Who cares? At least U of O is a real college and something Oregonians can be proud of (sorry, PSU, but you deserve the disrespect). Made in Oregon was a crappy mall chain that sold chintsy, faux-northwestern garbage.

And, again, why is this in IA?
19
Hey dumbass, it used it say White Stag. How long have you lived here.
20
Go back to Eugene UofO. Nobody wants your smelly hippie ass here anyways.
21
Tear down the old white stag sign it lost all its nostalgia when it was changed
and no longer has any meaning except to Portland come lately's

Please wait...
