On behalf of all unionized workers in your education system, I want to say no to furlough but yes, yes, yes to any snow days. You may have noticed that we union people are currently star attractions in political battles across the Midwest, where we are portrayed by the right wing as modern day Caligulas in gilded chariots, siphoning off your tax dollars and devouring your children (we are, after all, alcoholic pedophiles and cannibals) more often than teaching them. One thing you don't know about us? We will willingly accept the loss of a day's wages if we get to play in the snow. So make some cocoa, keep your brat at home and let us have our fun please.

Everyone gets all bent out of shape when their taxpayer-funded daycare center,(i.e. public school system) is closed during the week. You don't hear me bitching about having to pay for your "idiot son" to stumble through our school system, so don't complain when you have to find a babysitter - or god forbid - spend time with your inbred spawn on snow days.

At least in Corvallis the school had contracted for a couple of snow days. If they didn't use them then the teachers were basically working an extra couple of days for no pay. If they used more than the 2 then the days had to be made up at the end of the year. There is a minimum number of days a district has to hold classes so they aren't lost, they just happen in June.

I live across from a middle-school and I'm constantly amazed every year what passes for a 'snow day'. These last ones were complete bull-shit too. Surprise surprise.
Makes me wonder how any kids from northern states, Canada, etc, ever get the time to get a education.

in reality snow days, furlows in disguise, save the districts far more $$$ than they lose in federal matching dollars, so the real truth is that it's all about economics, state school financing, lack of local financial control, and in a number of cases bloated school administrative bureaucracies [where much of your taxpayer money truly goes,NOT into the classroom]. School boards blindly follow the superintendent they hired so as not to look foolish when things got south, check out Portland Public Schools several years ago when they hired an incompetent, unqualified superintendent that decimated the east side schools and basically left the west side schools, where parent's wielded clout and resources, alone. She jumped ship to go work for Bill Gates while the district sank!]

Apparently, Anonymous, you haven't paid much attention to school funding: your payroll taxes(those you pay from your wages) are of little importance to school funding. Primarily, property taxes and lottery proceeds do. And regardless of whether you go to work or not, those taxes get paid, by homeowners and landlords. So buy a Mega Millions ticket, thank your landlord, sign over parental rights to your ex, and go back to Minnesota, if Minnesotan indifference to large amounts of snow is so important to you and your identity.
