Am I missing something? I get the passive-aggressive/crotchety theme of this week's Letters column, but Brian Barrett (the author of the first letter) is spectacularly WRONG. Paranoid Schizophrenia is absolutely considered an Axis I disorder (which encompasses more than just mood disorders). It has no business being casually lumped in with personality (Axis II) disorders like Narcissistic and Anti-Social personality disorder (and, for the record, "sociopathic personality disorder" doesn't technically exist).

I'm not sure many people are concerned with such distinctions, but if Mr Barrett feels compelled to submit these ideas, perhaps he's also willing to take a closer look at the DSM-IV before he cites it.

Schizophrenia, Paranoid Type is Code 296.30 in the DSM-IV-R. It is an Axis I disorder. It is about as far from an Axis II personality disorder as AIDS is from Acid Reflux.
