Letters to the Editor are supposed to be just letters to the editor right? In a real social democratic world, spoilt brats, we actually allow unabridged (NOT cut out and pasted in) letters void of your backtalk....I mean feedback. SheAAT, it's only 1/4 of a page after all. Also, as a bisexual nerd, I think Matthew is being rather over sensitive and should look into finding the source of his anger and how to deal with it. The larger portion of the Nerd and Geek society has embraced the term and identity, and wear it proud.
Though, the Mercury didn't do anyone any favors by going for the cheep answer. The GLBT community does face a (diminishing!) threat of daily violence outside mostly safe places like Portland, but most aren't dragged to death. And while there is still (illegal) slavery in the world, it isn't limited to one race. Instead, African Americans get institutionalized discrimination against their culture and race to the point where if they have a black name, they are unlikely to even get an interview for a job, much less be shut out once the manager see's their skin color.
