Over the past decade, the Raveonettes have steadily, reliably released a clutch of solid, dark, romantic records that evoke classic sounds from the past. Their sixth, Observator, came out this week, and it sees the Danish brand embracing a California sound—not the sunshine pop of the beaches, but Tinseltown's dark underbelly, of drugs and faded dreams of stardom. Apparently, songwriter Sune Rose Wagner was pretty fucked up when he was writing these songs, and Observator's tracks are alternately the most cold, clinical songs they've ever done ("Observations") and the most raw and heart-bloody ("Young and Cold").
And the Raveonettes are coming! They'll be at the Hawthorne Theatre on Friday, September 21, and we're giving away a pair of tickets. To enter, send an email to this address with "The Raveonettes" in the subject line (spelling counts!). Include your first and last name in the email, plus the name of your favorite Raveonettes song. We'll pick a winner at random and send him/her plus a guest on their merry way to the show. This'll be a relative quickie—we'll close it tomorrow (Friday) at midnight, so get entering and good luck!
