The Helio Sequence at the Doug Fir

Last Tuesday, before a bunch of fun things got cancelled from the snow, the Helio Sequence played a Red Bull Sound Select-sponsored show at the Doug Fir. While corporate sponsorship for shows can often be tedious—with their logos absolutely everywhere and, in this case, the smell of bad high school drinking experiences in the air—it ended up being a great event! Modern Kin and Genders were also on the bill, and $3 for three bands is hard to beat.

These days the boys of the Helio Sequence seem to play Portland shows so little, so it's special at any opportunity. They had a nice variety of old and new in their set, with lots of songs from their fifth and newest album, Negotiations. I've loved watching their sound evolve over the years and although I will probably always love their earlier, more synth heavy albums the best, I've definitely enjoyed the vocal breadth their new songs are exploring. I should also mention that this is by far the most well-lit show I've ever shot at the Doug Fir, so thanks to Red Bull for that. (Ahem, Doug Fir—take note...)

Lots of photos after the jump!
