Chile in the mid- to late-1970s was a terrifying and mystifying place—caught in the throes of Augusto Pinochet’s violent coup and then his junta’s bid to keep power. Leftists and critics clammed up for fear of “disappearing” or being jailed. Pinochet has been out of power for decades and died in 2006, but his scars remain. Lola Arias’ The Year I Was Born shows how today’s adults, a generation removed from that violence, still grapple with their parents’ pain. The performers do what people of a certain age (their 30s) do: They try to understand. In Arias’ play, that means physically transforming into their parents, via props and clothing. It also means inhabiting their parents’ music and humor and the lies they sometimes told. DENIS C. THERIAULT
