The Importance of Being Earnest

Gerding Theater at the Armory (map) Northwest
Tuesdays-Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Continues through March 29 2009

$30-66.50

For those not familiar with The Importance of Being Earnest, in brief: Oscar Wilde arranged some snappy one-liners into a sly critique of the British upper class, disguised them as a romantic farce, and played them for the clueless enjoyment of said class. Puns are involved. Now, Portland Center Stage weighs in on Wilde's classic with a heedlessly high-spirited, by-the-book production that isn't so much bad as it is utterly unremarkable. The show is pretty to look at, but overall the production fails to convey any depth behind the script's rapid-fire bandiage. AH
