Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People, Last Meadow

Winningstad Theatre (map) Southwest
Sept. 4-6, 6:30 p.m. and Mon., Sept. 7, 8:30 p.m. 2009

A Brooklyn-based, Bessie Award-winning choreographer with hipster appeal, Miguel Gutierrez has worked extensively in both the United States and Europe on solo and group exhibitions. Past work has encouraged inclusiveness with the audience and tested the limits of what defines dance, not only in movement but also in sound and speech. Last Meadow is making its debut at TBA, a three-person performance that borrows movement and dialogue from James Dean in his three films: East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. Using Dean as an iconic symbol of America, the piece paints the US as a country defined by warped expectations and untended needs, and it’s a good bet that the performance will be as withering as it is enjoyable. Fun facts: When used in an agricultural sense, the “last meadow” refers to the area receiving the least amount of irrigated water, and in the medical world it refers to a type of stroke caused by deprivation of blood to the brain.
