Wooden Indian Burial Ground, Máscaras, Ah God

As far as shows with co-headliners and all-local lineups go, you’d be hard-pressed to find one as sizzling as the Wooden Indian Burial Ground/Sun Angle tandem. Both bands are steeped in primordial rock ’n’ roll goop, though at somewhat opposite ends of the spectrum. Last February Wooden Indian Burial Ground dropped the mind-bending psych-punk epic How’s Your Favorite Dreamer?, a 14-track maelstrom of squirrelly garage jams anchored by the spastic guitar calisthenics of Justin Fowler. Sun Angle recently released an impressively diverse sophomore LP, Skullflower, on XRAY Records. The trio’s textured soundscapes are swathed in trippy grooves, thanks to far-reaching influences such as jazz, cumbia, pop, and punk. Take the new album’s second track, “Kill the Ill,” a prog-ish exposition of multi-genre hopscotch that’s a serious contender for Portland song of the year. RYAN J. PRADO
