Portland Center Stage’s cheerful, high-energy adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps will appeal immensely to devout Hitchcock fans, devout Monty Python fans, and anyone else with an appreciation for highbrow camp. Though the film has a cast of dozens, four actors bring the stage show to life. (Nice work, PCS, on hiring locals all around—and nice work, actors, on living up to the physically and comedically challenging roles. Ebbe Roe Smith, you are a funny, funny man.) The use of props is virtuosic, the cast’s physical and vocal talents used to good effect (particularly memorable: lanky Leif Norby squirreling through a window frame), and director Nancy Keystone does notably impressive work in creating a train-top chase scene with only light, sound, and some scant props. 39 Steps certainly isn’t for everyone, but granting a slightly rarified (and pointedly undignified) sensibility, it’s worth a look.
