The first feature-length film from visual artist Shirin Neshat frames itself as a look at 1953 Iran in the wake of a British- and American-backed coup. As it weaves together the stories of five women, its effect becomes more visceral than historical. In one of the scenes, a woman is seen prostituting herself; there’s literally no man in the frame as she creaks detachedly back and forth on the bed. Visual marvels proliferate as the story becomes more human, more universal: nobody’s ever lived history through more than a single, flawed, sometimes alienated point of view. SK
