Hard Edge, Hard Work showcases films and performances from abstract women artists, claiming to seek the impetus of these women’s artistic obsessions. A sampler from Stephanie Snyder’s curation: Kate Gilmore’s 2010 Whitney Biennial performance is an explosive work, where she aggressively kicks through unfinished drywall with her high heels, peeling back pink-painted chunks with her hands, while pummeling the wall. The proto-David Lynchian beauty of Maya Deren and Marcel Duchamp’s unfinished 1944 film Witch’s Cradle, meanwhile, is a marvelous glimpse of fresh cinema from over 60 years ago. If the rest of Hard Edge, Hard Work follows suit, it will be an interesting 60 minutes of ladies obsessively abstracting—at worst, there will be bursts of inspiration followed by tedium. Presented in conjunction with Abstract, an art show at Reed College’s Cooley Gallery.
