Powell's City of Books

The date is 1897: A severed torso floats onto a pier where it is discovered by two boys, and blueberry pickers in a field in Harlem find severed limbs. These gruesome events sparked the tabloid wars of the late 19th century and initiated the "birth of yellow journalism." They're also the subject of Paul Collins' new book, The Murder of the Century. Collins, Portland-based, is a contributor to such folks as McSweeney's and Cabinet.
