Oklahoma!

Portland Center Stage (map) Northwest
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through Nov. 6 2011

$20-39

Portland Center Stage Artistic Director Chris Coleman has attempted to make Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! new by setting the play in an African American town, a decision that the show's dramaturgical notes clearly explain is historically accurate. Where Coleman's choice becomes problematic, however, is in the story that isn't being told with the production. Race simply isn't a topic found in the original book that Hammerstein wrote for a 1940s Broadway audience, and Coleman hasn't found a way to tackle this topic in the current production. NOAH DUNHAM
