Over three years ago, Califone released their ninth album, the nominal soundtrack to a ghost movie written and directed by Tim Rutili. That All My Friends Are Funeral Singers is their most recent album is an indisputable fact; that it is their best album is an opinion (held by me) that can and will be debated by Califone fans continuously until their next album comes out. Hopefully this will happen soon. Until then, it's a testament to Rutili's universe—a backwoods cabin crammed full of the anxieties of post-ism and endless percussive elements—that both the album and the fights on message boards feel as fresh and thought-provoking as they did three years ago. To tide us over, meanwhile, Portland label Jealous Butcher has just reissued Califone's 2002 album Sometimes Good Weather Follows Bad People on vinyl. Rebecca Gates and the Consortium are opening, and they're fellow devotees of meticulous production and the art of the album. Their latest, The Float, ranges between loungy pop and soulful blues.
